Pause and Notice
As you begin this experience as a climate action educator, we’d like you to pause to consider your view of Leadership.
For many educators, leadership is synonymous with leadership by position: school administrators, heads of government, elders in a community.
We believe that everyone–regardless of role, age, rank, or position of power–should have the ability to lead. And, because of the nature and urgency of climate action education, this is an area in great need of new leaders.
Today, we should view climate action as leadership.
By your decision to join in this experience, you took a committed action. That action equates to an opportunity for leadership.
We are in a moment now where the definition of climate action educator and leadership in climate action education is being formed. We invite you now to reconsider your definition of leadership with these two questions:
How do your thoughts and feelings of your responses to the question before compare to your thoughts and feelings of these two questions? Did you see an entirely new person as a leader? Did you happen to see yourself when you pictured a climate action leader?
For us, we see you!
Climate action educators and leaders, we find, exhibit a number of qualities and traits that bring them to this work and to this moment in education. Many are not climate science experts, but simply see an opportunity to meet students as co-learners to go on a path of discovery to identify ways they want to together (or independently) contribute to the world.
